I first discovered my love of film when I was 11, trying to emulate my favorite YouTubers at the time. Using my point-and-shoot digital camera and Windows Movie Maker I lovingly brought my videos to life like Frankenstein stitching together sub-par pieces to form an overall unsatisfactory product. Luckily, when I'm passionate about something I'm too stubborn to quit just because I'm bad at it. I worked on the morning school news in middle school and high school, slowly but surely trading my sloppy stitches for purposeful curation. At 18 I was accepted into the UNC School of the Arts for filmmaking and was positively enamored. With the craft, with the school, with the idea of living my life as an artist. I got my degree and finally evolved from clumsy, inexperienced Frankenstein into something more akin to an actual doctor* starting my residency, to really stretch this metaphor. Now I'm looking for opportunities to grow and challenge myself, satiate my unending curiosity, tell some extraordinary stories, and connect with people who love creation as much as I do.
*Let the record show that Victor Frankenstein never actually got his doctorate, he just made a creature, had a nervous breakdown, and then dropped out. Understandable given the situation, but far from earning a degree.
First, the animated Barbie movies were a staple during my childhood, so a large part of this choice is driven by nostalgia.
Second, even after growing into an adult and learning more about singing and music theory, the songs in Princess and the Pauper still hold up as well-written, wildly entertaining, and musically compelling.
Third and most importantly, I got tired of the pretentious mindset of film people trying to prove that they're the most cultured by name-dropping progressively more obscure and artsy films that only "real" lovers of film would know. Love of art shouldn't be reduced to competition. All forms of appreciation are valid and should be celebrated, not just those deemed the "most serious". Princess and the Pauper is fun, silly, and entertaining, and represents the playful joy and excitement I want to fill my life with.
I'm not interested in promoting an agenda or converting anybody, it's just a part of who I am. Using these pronouns makes me the most comfortable and feel the most like myself. I promise it doesn't have to be a whole thing, it's just something to remember, like how some people have a hyphenated last name or a title. I completely understand that it might take time and practice to get used to and I'm not going to make a scene if somebody gets it wrong.
